The Power of Choice

The Wade vrs Rowe crosses are being put up by Churches around Santa Maria as I write this Musing column.  I thought you would be interested in the following:

While researching the Apostolic Father Tertullian, (died about 200A.D.) I ran across the following in his Apologeticum  ch. 9, 8.  I am providing the internet reference.

"Indeed for us murder is forbidden once and for all, so it is not permitted even to destroy what is conceived in the womb. To prohibit the birth of a child is only a faster way to murder; it makes little difference whether one destroys a life already born or prevents it from coming to birth. It is a human being, who is to be a human being, for the whole fruit is already present in the seed."

“...   Infanticide (particularly of baby girls, whether by drowning or exposure 'to cold, starvation and the dogs') and abortion were both legal and usual in antiquity. Glover quotes (p.49) the papyrus letter of Hilarion to Alis (AD 1); ‘If it was a girl, put it out.’"

The disciples of the first three centuries made some tough decisions about their faith.  Contrast their stance on abortion to that held by many who profess faith in the Year of Our Lord, 2012.  The early church found there was power in choice.  Their choices not only led to martyrdom, those tough  choices led to changes in civilization.

Matthew 17:20 (GW)

He told them, "Because you have so little faith. I can guarantee this truth: If your faith is the size of a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
